Let me start out by saying that if you own other FeiyuTech devices, you’ll be up to speed quickly. Like the Pocket 3 gimbal/camera, sliding from left to right, right to left, or up from the bottom of the touch screen reveals hidden menus. After the menus have slid into view, you’ll see a line appear on the screen. Slide from the line across the screen to dismiss the menu.

The AI tracking is great for one-person shoots, where you need to be on-cam. It uses hand signals to toggle features on and off. You’ll want to memorize them. There are only a few.

There are plenty of excellent YouTube reviews, showing the Mini 2 in action. The cellphone mounting option is fantastic. It does a good job of balancing my Samsung S22 Ultra in a case. That’s a big hunk o’ phone–if it will balance that, it will balance any other phone easily.

You can save battery by turning off the AI when you’re not using it.

The dual-handle design is great. The encoder knob talks to FeiyuTech’s camera app wirelessly, and that’s a great bonus.

I recommend this gimbal highly. You CAN trip it up somewhat. It doesn’t invert as flawlessly as my DJI Ronin S. But that gimbal is SO HEAVY compared to this one. It’s somewhat comparable to the Zhiyun Crane M3 that I have, but the phone mount on the Scorp Mini 2 is frankly best-of-class. And the AI tracking is GOOD!!

So I give this thing a very enthusiastic FIVE STARS. I’ve read some negative reviews, and while I don’t want to discredit anyone’s experience, some of the complaints I’ve read are frankly user error. Gimbals are not uncomplicated, and you need to learn each one–all models behave differently. I’ve been shooting with gimbals for years, and I think that’s the best bit of advice I can provide. Think of it in the same way as learning a particular camera or even a musical instrument. You have to meld your movement to its behavior, and once you get a feel for how it responds, you can make good use of it. It’s unrealistic to imagine that you’ll just pick up a gimbal you’ve never used and have a magical experience. You’re a part of the machine, too. I was able to adjust to the Mini 2 rather easily, and for my money, it’s probably the best cellphone gimbal on the market right now…and it will easily mount mirrorless cameras, action-cams, and even DSLRs if you stick to very light lenses.

I am using this gimbal with a Sony RX100 VII.

The USB-C to micro-B cable they provide is the only one that works and it does not do everything. That is, you cannot control zoom digital with that camera. I suspect if Sony provided a firmware update that allowed such control then Feiyutech would likely provide an update for it.

Because the provided cable has a rather long micro-USB end (that plugs into the Sony on the user’s right side) it makes it difficult to freely move the camera in the mount to get a perfect yaw balance… which you can imagine as tilting the horizon angle rather than a front-to-back balance. I bought several such cables and L-shape adapters to get a little more room on the side but nothing worked.

I do not know why but the usual suspect is that Sony does some weird crossover wire stuff that makes their cables onn-standard. But that is also why I thought a simple L-adapter should just work with the cable that comes with the unit.

In any case, I found that once I purchased a hard cage for the camera, and attached the Scorp-Mini camera mount to take, I got a little more room and the provided cable worked nicely. I can balance it easily now and that took a little practice and some head-scratching events where the unit would shudder when turned on… because I had not balanced it well enough. But I am confident with it now.

That said, it is still annoying that I have to zoom the camera manually.. it is awkward and cannot really pull it off during a recording. So that is limiting. I do not know if that is a limitation if you are using this with a cell phone mounted and I know they sell a motorized mount for this that uses a cable that loops around a typical DSLR zoom ring to do zoom using the gimbal’s controls. but that won’t work on a retracting lens camera afaik.

I’m using the FeiyuTech Scorp Mini with either a phone or a mirrorless camera with a short lens. For either application, the Scorp Mini works well.

My only hurdle using this gimbal was memorizing the calibration steps when attaching a phone or camera (because not all gimbals follow the same process); watching the instructional video helped, but I found myself referring back to it every so often until muscle memory kicked in (I also made sure to retain the instruction manual, just in case). The gimbal is lightweight, comfortable to hold, and intuitive to use once set up.

I’ve had the Scorp Mini for about 16 months, but it is not a daily use item for me. As such, I appreciate that it holds a charge for months between uses, which is more than I can say for other electronic devices I own. If your expected payload falls within the specified range, this “mini” gimbal is a good choice without having to go bigger (or more expensive).

I have tried many gimbals and this one is the keeper. I use my iPhone in a smallrig cage with an anamorphic lens and variable ND filter. It balances fine with the Scorp Mini. I like the touchscreen of the Mini. The Mini P is similar but has no touch screen although it is a lot less expensive. The good thing about both these gimbals is that the shutter button on the gimbal controls the phone camera shutter with third party apps. It works with filmic Pro and Cinema P3 and the native camera app. The Crane M3S gimbal does not do that. While I can’t change settings in 3rd party apps I can start and stop recording with the gimbal. The extra handle is great although it makes the gimbal a little bulkier. But I like the ergonomics and the build quality is good. I am still waiting for the ai tracking module that will let me track people in third party apps too.

The media could not be loaded.

Personally I bounce between using an a6400 or a A7 series Sony and this gimbal can rock both like a champ. I love that the Scorp Mini is literally half the weight of the DJI Ronin SC2 with the handle.

If you are interested in using large lenses the mini wouldn’t be the best choice, but they have larger Scorp models that can handle that. For me I have no interest in long lenses, I want a compact set up that I can have with me all the time, typically using primes or small wide angles, and for that application I couldn’t be more impressed.

I am excited to use the extra modes more, this gimbal is feature packed and I would highly recommend. For less than $300, I can’t imagine a better gimbal.
